Three questions to know when you can stop working

years

€

Deposits, PPR, funds and stocks. Don’t include the home you live in.
€/month

We’ll assume expenses of €2,600 per month, a pension of €1,500 and a moderate profile (assumed return of 4.5% per year). You can change everything in “In detail”.

How we calculate

We work out how much you need to put together to live off the returns on your savings, and when you get there.
  1. How much you need

We divide your annual expenses by the reference withdrawal rate. It is a rule of prudence, not a guarantee.Assumption
  2. How long it takes

We grow what you already have and what you save each month at a hypothetical return, in today’s euros.Assumption
  3. The public pension

From the normal pension access age, we count on an estimated pension, which reduces what you have to withdraw from your savings.Legal rule · DL n.º 187/2007; Portarias n.º 358/2024/1 e n.º 476/2025/1

Every euro of expenses counts double

Rodrigo and Catarina were looking for a better investment. They found years hidden in their expenses. He is 36 years old, she is 35. They live in Vila Nova de Gaia, have €60,000 invested and save €1,400 per month. The simulator gave them an age: 60 years. Then it showed them that €300 less per month on energy, insurance and credit was worth 4 years of freedom.

Independence doesn’t mean stopping for good

Alice wanted to stop at 55. The simulator showed her a possible path. She is 42 and lives in São João da Madeira. She has €180,000 invested, spends €1,800 per month and is counting on a pension of €900 from the legal retirement age. To stop for good at 55, she would have to save €2,163 per month. With a part-time job earning €1,000 per month until the pension, the math changed.

Myths

  • Myth“With the 4% rule I never run out of money.”It is a rule of prudence based on data from other markets, not a guarantee. That is why we use a more prudent reference withdrawal rate. What to do: test your target with a lower rate and keep a cash reserve.Source: CrediSegur assumption.
  • Myth“To be independent I need to earn a lot.”What weighs most is the share of income you save, not the salary. What to do: simulate with a higher savings rate and see how many years you gain.Source: simulator calculation.
  • Depends“If I stop working early, I lose my pension.”Your years of contributions count. But a pension claimed before the normal age is cut, and years without contributions lower the amount. What to do: ask for a pension simulation on Segurança Social Direta.Source: DL n.º 187/2007.

Frequently asked questions

FIRE stands for “Financial Independence, Retire Early”. The idea is to build enough wealth so that its returns pay for your life, and you can choose if, how much, and when you work.
You divide your annual expenses by the withdrawal rate. With €2,600 per month (€31,200 per year) and a rate of 3.5%, you need around €891,429. The simulator subtracts your future pension and calculates the bridge until the legal retirement age.
The 4% rule comes from a 1994 American study (W. Bengen), based on a portfolio of stocks and bonds and 30‑year retirements. If you stop working well before retirement age, your money needs to last longer and, in Portugal, investment gains are taxed. That’s why we use 3.5%, an assumption by CrediSegur. You can change it under “Fine‑tune assumptions”.
The normal age to access the old-age pension is 66 years and 9 months in 2026. Anyone who claims their pension before that age faces reductions, including the sustainability factor. That’s why the simulator uses your wealth as a bridge until the legal age. Check your estimated pension on Segurança Social Direta.
Lean FIRE is financial independence with minimum expenses (in the simulator, 75% of your expenses). Coast FIRE is the age from which, if your profile earns what we assume, your assets would reach retirement on their own with no further savings. Barista FIRE is stopping full-time work and keeping a partial income until retirement.
The simulator does not recommend investment products: it uses return profiles as assumptions. PPR in the form of insurance and capitalization insurance policies have tax advantages when held for the long term, under the conditions set by law; CrediSegur can show you the available insurance solutions. For other investments, speak with an authorized institution.

Important note: This simulation is for information and illustration purposes only, in today’s money (values discounted by the stated inflation). The returns are hypothetical, before product fees, not guaranteed, and the value of investments can go down; these projections are not a reliable indicator of future results. The withdrawal rate is an assumption and does not guarantee that your assets will last forever. Tax on gains (28%) is estimated on the gains portion withdrawn; the specific regime depends on the products and your personal situation and may change. The pension amount is the one you indicate and is not calculated by the simulator. This does not constitute financial or tax advice or an investment recommendation.
