How we calculate

We show how much you spend a year on gambling, how much of it comes back in prizes and what that money would be worth elsewhere.
  1. What you spend a year

Weekly spend times 52, and its weight in the household income, compared with reference thresholds.Your data; Assumption
  2. How much comes back, on average

We use the prizes paid against the money staked, by type of game, in the most recent official data. On average, you always lose.Official source · SRIJ and Santa Casa, 2025 data
  3. What it would be worth elsewhere

The same amount saved over the reference horizon, with a hypothetical return. If the self-assessment points to a risk, we show the helpline and make no commercial offers.Assumption · PGSI scale

Fábio

Of income 6.0%

Spends per month€108

Espinho · How much is gambling costing me?He is 34 years old and spends about €25 per week, mainly on several games. He had never done the math: that’s €108 per month, 6.0% of the €1,800 that come into the household, around 6 times the low-risk gambling benchmark. If he put that money aside for 10 years, with a moderate profile (4.5% per year, assumed), he would have around €16,302. He started by taking the 9-question test.
  • €108 per month
  • 6.0% of income
  • €16,302 in 10 years

Only then did she start thinking about savings.

What is True and What is Myth in Gambling

Four ideas often heard from gamblers, and what to do about each.
  • Myth“I only lose what I bet, and sometimes I even win.”False. Games are designed so that, on average, a portion always remains with those who run them. In sports betting, this margin is around 22% of what is bet. The prizes you win along the way come out of this account, they don't change it.What to do: Calculate what comes out of your pocket in a normal week, already with prizes deducted, and see how much it is in a year.Source: SRIJ, relatórios trimestrais do jogo online (apostas desportivas: receita bruta ÷ volume apostado).
  • Myth“With a good system, you win in the long run.”False. No betting system changes the advantage of those who run the game. The longer you play, the more the result approaches the average loss, not the other way around. What to do: If you play to make money, see in the simulator how much that same money would be worth if set aside.Source: SRIJ, relatórios trimestrais do jogo online (apostas desportivas: receita bruta ÷ volume apostado).
  • Myth“I've lost a lot, luck has to turn.”False. Each bet is independent of the previous one: what you lost does not increase the probability of winning next. Returning to play to recover what was lost is, in fact, one of the warning signs of the 9-question test. What to do: Take the self-assessment test in “Is gambling weighing on my life?”.Source: Problem Gambling Severity Index (Ferris e Wynne, 2001), níveis da autoavaliação do SRIJ.
  • Depends“I play a little, so it's not a problem.”It depends. What matters is not just the amount, but the portion of income that gambling takes and what changes in your life. The reference is not to spend more than 1% of income on gambling. What to do: Check the weight on your income in the simulator and, if you have doubts, take the test.Source: 1 %, orientações canadianas de jogo de baixo risco (2021); 2 % e 5 %, proposta da CrediSegur (outubro de 2026).

The next step

The money that no longer goes to gambling can cut expenses and start a savings plan.

Frequently asked questions

We use what comes out of your pocket in a normal week, already deducting what you win, and convert it to a monthly and annual amount. That’s the money that stays with whoever runs the games. The invested amount is that same money set aside every month, with monthly compounding, at the return of the chosen profile, before taxes and costs.
The Canadian low-risk gambling guidelines, from 2021, recommend not spending more than 1% of the household’s gross income on gambling. Here we apply the same 1% to net income, which is what you know by heart: the limit ends up a bit lower than in the guideline. The 2% and 5% limits used in the colors are a CrediSegur proposal to show the weight in your budget.
No. It’s an adapted version of the Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI; Ferris and Wynne, 2001), with the same levels as the SRIJ self-assessment. It helps you reflect, but it does not replace an assessment by a health professional.
No. The test answers are calculated on your device and are not sent or stored. If you request to be contacted, we receive the data you enter in the form (first name, last name, e-mail, mobile number, date of birth, preferred time and message), the contact method you choose and the monthly cost that the simulator calculated, which we use as a starting amount for savings. We do not receive your income, the type of game you play or your test answers.
Yes, and there are years when you lose money. The difference is in the average: in gambling, the prizes paid out are always less than what is wagered, so over time the player loses. In a diversified, long-term investment, the historical average has been positive, but it is not guaranteed.
