Entering higher education is an important step that brings new financial responsibilities. Between tuition fees, accommodation, food, transportation, books, and materials, costs can quickly impact your wallet.

It's not always possible to cover all these expenses at once, which is why there are financing solutions specifically designed to help students and families invest in academic education without compromising their budget.

In this guide, we explain simply what the main financing options available for higher education in Portugal are, their characteristics, and what you should consider before choosing.

1. Personal Credit for Education

There are personal credits designed for studying, in Portugal or abroad — undergraduate, master's, doctorate, postgraduate, or programs like Erasmus — that can cover enrollment, tuition fees, and other expenses. Generally, they have three phases:

  • Utilization: the period during which the money is released, usually equal to the duration of the course, either all at once or in installments
  • Grace Period: while you study, you only pay the interest
  • Repayment: after the grace period, you pay the principal and interest in installments until the credit is fully paid off

2. Credit Line with Mutual Guarantee

A public line, where the State acts as guarantor, only for courses in Portugal: undergraduate, master's, doctorate, or higher professional technical courses. Repayment begins after the utilization period and any grace period.

3. Compare the Proposals

Amounts, terms, grace periods, and rates vary from bank to bank: always compare the TAEG and MTIC in the standardized information sheet of each proposal.

4. Required Documents

  • Citizen Card
  • Enrollment proof
  • Responsibility map from Banco de Portugal
  • Last pay slip
  • Last IRS declaration
  • Proof of address or residence
  • Proof of IBAN

Note: Depending on your case, the bank may request additional documents to confirm your eligibility.

5. What to Do Now

Now that you know these two solutions, compare them side by side and calmly evaluate which makes more sense for your situation. Consider the duration of the course you want to attend, the amount you really need, whether you will study in Portugal or abroad, and how much you can afford to pay per month.

Before proceeding, request a personalized analysis from a credit manager. Besides helping you find the most suitable solution for your case, they can clarify all the financing conditions, such as the interest rate, grace period, contract duration, and total credit cost.

More important than just looking at the TAN is analyzing the TAEG and the MTIC, as these indicators reflect the true cost of the loan.

Run a simulation and discover the proposals that suit you, without commitment. Our intermediation service has no costs for you — by law, only banks remunerate us; the credit has the costs indicated in the TAEG and MTIC of each proposal.
