Electric scooters, do they need insurance? True or false?
The scooter craze is here to stay, but what many still don't know is that depending on their characteristics, it may be necessary to take out Liability Insurance (RC), similar to car insurance. It depends. Since June 20, 2025 (Decree-Law No. 26/2025), automobile liability insurance is mandatory for vehicles with a maximum design speed exceeding 25 km/h, or weighing more than 25 kg and exceeding 14 km/h. ANSR clarified that common electric scooters are not subject to this requirement; some more powerful ones may be, according to ASF.
In case of an accident, who covers the damages?
Just like with car insurance, if you drive without the mandatory insurance, you risk getting a fine.
And in the event of an accident, depending on who is responsible, you might have the misfortune of bearing all the costs. This can represent a huge financial risk.
Even if your scooter is not covered by the obligation, taking out liability insurance (RC) can be a smart decision.
As the saying goes: Better safe than sorry.
If you're unsure whether your scooter fits these criteria, send us a message, and we'll explain the differences and present you with the proposals from the insurers we work with.
Drive safely! See you soon, Henrique Maricato
