Coverage by coverage: what you need and have, what you're missing, what you might not need, and what remains to be confirmed.

Car Insurance5 to confirm

  • Liability · To confirmIt's mandatory for any car that circulates. Without it, the car can be seized and there's a fine.
  • Fire, theft, or robbery · To confirmThe car sleeps on the street: theft and vandalism are more likely.
  • Natural phenomena · To confirmYou park on the street: storms, floods, and trees are a real risk.
  • Travel assistance · To confirmAn older car breaks down more often: towing and transportation make a difference.
  • Replacement Vehicle · To confirmYou need the car for work and have no alternative.
  • Own damage (impact, collision, and rollover) · Can waitThe car still has some value. Compare the premium with what you would receive in a total loss.
  • Isolated glass breakage · Can waitUseful and usually cheap, but not essential.
  • Occupants · Can waitLiability insurance already covers passengers, but not the driver.
  • Legal Protection · Can waitUseful in a dispute. Confirm if you already have it in another insurance.

Home Insurance6 to confirm

  • Building Fire · To confirmIt's mandatory in apartments (buildings in horizontal property), for the unit and common areas.
  • Multi-risk Building Insurance · To confirmThe bank usually requires multi-risk insurance as long as there is a mortgage.
  • Fixed Capital · To confirmBelow the cost of rebuilding, the insurer only pays a proportional part of the damages. Above, you pay more without receiving more.
  • Seismic Phenomena · To confirmAn earthquake can destroy the house and many policies don't include it. It costs about €50 per year for €125,000 of coverage.

Health and Accidents1 to confirm

The mandatory insurances that almost no one knows

They are not for the car or the house, and the fines reach thousands of euros.
Do you issue green receipts?
Do you have a domestic worker, even for a few hours?
Do you have a potentially dangerous breed dog?

How we calculate

You don't need to read the entire policy. You need to know where the answers are.
  1. Gather the specific conditions

It's the part of the policy with your coverages, sums insured, and deductibles. It's in the email or the insurer's client area.1
  2. Check the sum insured and deductible

For the home, the sum insured should be the reconstruction cost. For the car, the deductible is what you pay for each claim.2
  3. Look for duplicates

Bank cards, the condo, and the company you work for may already provide some of these coverages.3
  4. Note the renewal date

It's the right time to change coverages or insurers, without penalties.4

Illustrative cases

Fausto e Débora at home, with insurance papers on the table
Illustrative example

Fausto e Débora were paying for 'all-risk' insurance. They were missing what mattered most.

They live in Mafra with two children, in an apartment with a mortgage, and the car is 11 years old. They were paying €1,470 per year in insurance and thought they were protected.
  1. 1“We have everything insured, don't we?”
  2. 2They had 5 coverages that they might not need: own damage (impact, collision, and rollover), fire, theft, or robbery, travel assistance, replacement Vehicle, and building Fire. And they were missing seismic Phenomena and total and Permanent Disability. 3 remained unconfirmed.
  3. 3With a manager, they confirmed the condo policy and card assistance, added earthquake and total and permanent disability coverage, and reviewed the own damage coverage for a car worth about €4,000.

Lourenço next to the car, before going to work
Illustrative example

Lourenço was going to get 'all-risk' insurance for a car worth €3,000.

Lives in Barcelos in a rented apartment and is self-employed. The car is 12 years old and is used for work. Before contracting, wanted to know what was really needed.
  1. 1“The seller said it was best to have everything.”
  2. 2Own damage, fire or theft, and natural phenomena were probably unnecessary: the car is worth less than €5,000. What made sense for him was travel assistance, replacement Vehicle, home Contents, water Damage, family Liability, critical Illness, and hospitalization Capital of €30,000 or More, in addition to liability, which is mandatory.
  3. 3He kept the mandatory and what made sense for his life. And discovered that, being self-employed, work accident insurance is also mandatory: he didn't know.

What's true and what's a myth in insurance

Four ideas we hear often, and what to do about each.
  • Myth“I have 'all-risk' insurance.”False. ASF itself says no insurance covers everything. The name usually refers to own damage, which has exclusions, deductibles, and car depreciation. What to do: Check the list of coverages and exclusions in the specific conditions.
  • Depends“The condo insurance already covers my home.”Depends. Some condo insurances cover only common areas, while others also cover individual units. If it does cover, you might be paying for the building twice. What to do: Ask the administration for the building's policy and compare it with yours.
  • Myth“The mortgage life insurance must be from the bank.”False. The insurer is your choice, and the bank can only require death coverage. However, changing it might increase the spread if you had a discount for having the insurance with the bank. What to do: Do the math in the simulator “Is it worth removing the insurance from the bank?”.
  • Truth“More coverage doesn't mean more protection.”True. A house insured for less than its reconstruction cost only receives a portion of the damages, no matter how many coverages it has. The correct capital is worth more than an extra coverage. What to do: Confirm the house's capital and update it every year.

Frequently Asked Questions

In the specific conditions of the policy: it's the part of the contract with your coverages, sums insured, and deductibles. It is usually in the insurer's email or in the client area. For the car, you can confirm if it has valid insurance on the ASF consumer portal, by license plate, for free.
Yes. Most people don't know all the coverages they have. The tool shows what remains to be confirmed, and a manager can review your policy with you, at no cost.
No. When a coverage seems excessive or duplicated, we say 'you might not need it' and explain why. The decision is yours, after confirming in the policy or with a manager. Never cancel a mandatory insurance or one required by your credit without having another.
It depends on the building's policy. Fire insurance is mandatory in buildings with horizontal property and can be done by the condo, covering the units, or by each unit owner. Ask the administration for the policy and see if your unit is included.
Because in a total loss, the insurer pays the car's value, already depreciated, minus the deductible. With a low-value car, you pay every year to receive little. We use as a reference a car below €5,000 or a premium above 10% of the car's value. These are assumptions: confirm with a manager.
Three that almost no one knows: the work accident insurance for those who issue green receipts (Decree-Law No. 159/99); the work accident insurance for domestic workers, even for a few hours a week (fine from €500 to €3,750); and the civil liability insurance for potentially dangerous dog breeds (Decree-Law No. 315/2009, fine from €650 to €1,500). In buildings with horizontal property, fire insurance is also mandatory.
Important Note: Informative tool. The classifications follow CrediSegur rules (version 2026.10-2) and the coverages, sums insured, deductibles, and exclusions vary from policy to policy: always confirm in your policy's conditions.
