How much do you pay for IUC, and when?

See your car's IUC, how much to save per month, and in which months you'll pay with the new calendar. Or find out how much it changes per month if you switch cars.
  • Registered credit intermediary and insurance agent at BdP and ASF
  • Official IUC tables and new payment calendar
  • Intermediation service at no cost to you
IUC will no longer be paid in the registration month
  • 2026: Still in the registration month.
  • 2027: In October, or in July and October.
  • 2028: From April, in 1 to 3 times.
The number of times depends on the total IUC of all your cars (in 2027, up to €500 you pay in one go).
What do you want to know?

Three questions to find out how much and when you pay IUC

The data is in the car document (DUA).
What is the car's fuel?

It's in the car document. For an imported car, use the first registration in Europe.
cm³

It's in the car document, in field P.1.
We account for the usual CO2 emissions for the fuel, with registration in March and no other cars. Fine-tune everything in 'In detail'.

How we calculate

IUC depends on the registration date, the fuel, the engine size and, for more recent cars, CO₂ emissions.
  1. The car's category

Registered up to June 2007: category A, by engine size, fuel and year. After that: category B, by engine size and CO₂, measured under NEDC or WLTP.Legal rule · Código do IUC
  2. Surcharges and exemptions

We add the surcharge for diesel cars and the CO₂ surcharge, when it applies. We show the disability exemption, up to the legal limit.Legal rule · Lei n.º 82-B/2014, art.º 216.º; Lei n.º 73-A/2025
  3. When you pay

The month of payment and the number of instalments, including the new calendar from 2027.Legal rule · DL n.º 161/2026

Illustrative example

Mafalda and Rogério already know when they will pay the IUC for both cars.

She has a diesel car from 2015; he has a gasoline car from 2019. Until now, they paid one IUC in March and another in July, and one of them always forgot. The simulator added both and showed the new calendar: in 2027 they pay everything in October; afterwards, in April and October.
  1. 1«With the change in 2027, will we pay two IUCs in a row?»
  2. 2Her IUC is €158.29 and his is €111.46: €269.75 per year. Since they are below €500, in 2027 they pay everything in October. From 2028, as they are between €100 and €500, they pay in April and October.
  3. 3They set aside €22.48 every month and marked the IUC dates on the calendar.

Illustration: Daniel charging an electric car at home
Illustrative example

Daniel did the math before changing cars.

He drives about 1,200 km per month for work, in a petrol car from 2011. He was considering an electric car but wasn't sure if the difference would be worth it. The simulator added up the IUC and energy costs for both cars: with the electric car, he saves about €171.35 per month, based on today's prices.
  1. 1“The electric car is more expensive to buy. Is it worth it day-to-day?”
  2. 2Today, he pays €185.58 in IUC per year and about €190 in petrol per month. With the electric car, the IUC drops to zero and electricity costs about €35 per month, charging at home.
  3. 3He asked a CrediSegur manager to compare the car credit and check the right charger and tariff for home.

What's True and What's a Myth About IUC

Four ideas we hear often, and what to do about each.
  • Myth“I sold the car, I no longer pay the IUC.”False, if the sale is not registered. The tax authorities charge whoever appears as the owner in the vehicle registration. What to do: Register the sale immediately, or ask the buyer for proof of registration.
  • Myth“Hybrids don't pay IUC.”False. Only 100% electric cars are exempt. Hybrids, even plug-ins, pay based on engine size and CO2 emissions. What to do: When changing cars, compare the IUC and energy in “I'm switching cars”.
  • Truth“For an imported car, the first registration in Europe counts.”True. A car from 2016 registered here in 2020 pays as a 2016 car. What to do: Use the year of the first European registration in the simulator.
  • Depends“In 2027, I'll pay the IUC twice in a row.”It shouldn't happen. 2027 is a transition year, with payment in October (or in July and October) to allow time since the previous year's payment. What to do: Check your calendar in “See when you pay” and save every month.

Frequently Asked Questions

For cars registered since July 2007, a tax is added for the engine size and a tax for CO2 emissions, and the total is increased according to the year of first registration (up to 15%). Diesel cars also pay an additional fee. For cars from 1981 to June 2007, the IUC depends only on the engine size, fuel type, and year.
In 2026, still in the month of registration. In 2027, a transition year, you pay in October if the total is up to €500, or in July and October if it's higher (you can pay everything in July). From 2028: up to €100, in April; up to €500, in April and October; above, in April, July, and October.
For the number of times you pay, starting from 2027, the total of all cars in your name counts. Indicate the IUC of the other cars in «Refine assumptions».
The year of first registration in the European Union or the European Economic Area, which is on the car's document. Not the Portuguese registration year.
With a disability degree of 60% or more, one car per year is exempt up to €240, if emissions do not exceed 180 g/km (NEDC) or 205 g/km (WLTP). The exemption must be requested from the Tax Office.
There are interest and fines. Always pay on the Tax Office Portal, via ATM, home banking, or MB WAY, or at a branch.
