IRS: Will I receive or pay?

See how much you should receive or pay in IRS for the year's income, if it's worth filing jointly, and what you can still do to pay less.
  • Current year's brackets and expenses
  • Jointly and separately
  • No costs or commitment
What do you want to know?

Three questions to find out if you receive or pay IRS

€

We count on €1,500.
€

Sum the IRS from the pay slips. If you don't know, we estimate it.
children

We count them as over 6 years old. In 'In detail', you can specify the ages.
If you haven't changed anything else, we assume a single person and €300 in health expenses. Couples, children's ages, and other expenses are in 'In detail'.

How we calculate

The same calculation that the Tax Authority performs, in this order.
  1. The income that pays IRS

From the gross annual salary, we deduct a fixed discount that the law grants to workers (€4,587 in 2026, or the Social Security deductions, if higher).Taxable income
  2. The tax by brackets

Each portion of the income is taxed at its bracket rate, from 12.5% to 48%. Jointly, the income is divided by two.The tax assessed
  3. The deductions and settlement

From the tax, we take the deductions for children and expenses. Then we compare it with what was already withheld from your salary.Receive or pay
What you receive as a is not a bonus: it's IRS that you overpaid throughout the year. What matters is the total IRS for the year.

Illustrative cases

Illustrative example

Daniela and Óscar never knew if it was worth filing IRS together.

Daniela and Óscar · fictional charactersThey live in Amarante and have two children, one aged 2 and the other 9. She earns €2,300 gross per month and he €1,050. Every year they accepted the automatic declaration. They wanted to know how much they would receive and if there was a better option.Salaries: €2,300 and €1,050 · 2 children · health and education: €2,300
  1. 1The question: “Together or separate? And how much do we receive?”
  2. 2What the simulator showed: together, the IRS for the year is €3,444. Separately, it's €4,147. Since the salaries are very different, together they pay €703 less. The two children deduct €1,500 directly from the tax.
  3. 3The result: they filed jointly. With what had already been withheld from their salaries (estimate), the settlement comes to €1,787 to receive.

Illustrative example

Mónica was paying rent and thought there was nothing else to deduct.

Mónica · fictional characterShe lives in Albufeira, is 33 years old, and earns €2,300 gross per month. The rent of the house already gives her a good deduction on IRS. She wanted to know if she could still do something before the end of the year.33 years · rent: €650 per month · IRS of the year: €4,202
  1. 1The question: “Am I still in time to pay less IRS this year?”
  2. 2What the simulator showed: the rent and other expenses already deduct €1,043, and the cap for her income is €2,097. There was still room for a PPR: with €2,000 placed until December 31, she would deduct an additional €400.
  3. 3The result: she was already setting money aside every month. She started putting a part into a PPR and ended up with €400 less IRS per year.

What's True and What's a Myth in IRS

Four ideas we often hear, and what to do about each.
  • Myth“Receiving a refund is a good sign.”False. The refund is your money, which you overpaid during the year. What matters is the total IRS you pay. What to do: Look at the IRS for the year, not just the settlement.
  • Myth“If I move up a bracket, I end up earning less.”False. The higher rate only applies to the portion of income that moves to the next bracket. The rest pays the same. What to do: See how much you gain from a raise in the 'Is Working More Worth It?' simulator.
  • Depends“Married couples pay less together.”Depends. It's beneficial when the salaries are very different. With similar salaries, it usually makes no difference. What to do: Simulate both options before filing. It's in the result.
  • Truth“Without NIF on the invoice, I lose the discount.”True. Only expenses with your NIF that appear on e-Fatura count. You must confirm them at the beginning of the following year, usually by the end of February. What to do: Always ask for an invoice with NIF and confirm e-Fatura in January.

For those who are employed and live in mainland Portugal. It does not include freelancers, rents, pensions, or investments. For those cases, we have other simulators.
It is the IRS for the income of 2026, which is submitted between April 1 and June 30 of 2027. We use the brackets and limits in effect in 2026.
If you don't provide that amount, we estimate it using the withholding tables from 2026, based on your salary and children. The exact amount is on your pay slips and the statement your company provides in January.
The law sets a cap on the sum of deductions for health, education, housing, care homes, invoices, and PPR. The cap decreases as income increases: from €2,500 to €1,000. Deductions for children and general expenses are outside this cap.
In the declaration itself, every year. Jointly, the income of both is summed and divided by two to find the rate. We do both calculations and tell you which is cheaper.
You deduct 20% of what you put into a PPR in the year, up to €400 if you are under 35 years old, €350 between 35 and 50 and €300 after 50. If you withdraw the money outside the legal conditions, you must return the deduction, with a penalty.
