Two questions to find out how much you take home

€/month

Minimum wage in 2026 (Mainland): €920.
years

We use your age to see how much you can borrow for a home. Up to 35 years old, check IRS Jovem in “In detail”.
We assume you’re an employee in Mainland, single and with no dependants, with a meal allowance of €10.00 per day on a card. You can change everything under “In detail”.

How we calculate

We start from the gross salary and take off what the law requires, so you see what reaches your account and how much you cost the company.
  1. Social Security

We deduct your share from the gross salary. On the company’s side, we add its share, to show the total cost.Legal rule · Código Contributivo, art.º 53.º
  2. The year’s IRS

We calculate the annual tax with the brackets, the specific deduction, the minimum subsistence amount and, if you are entitled to it, IRS Jovem. We divide it by month. The actual withholding follows the tables in force, so the difference shows up as a refund or a payment on the tax return.Legal rule · CIRS, art.º 12.º-B, 25.º, 68.º and 70.º
  3. We show the net pay and the cost to the company

We add the meal allowance and the twelfths, if you enter them.Your data

Inês was going to choose the offer with the higher salary. She did the math first.

She is 27 years old and received two job offers in Porto. The first pays €1,650 gross per month. The second pays €1,500, but adds a meal allowance on card and a health insurance policy given to the whole team.

Helena wanted to give the team a raise. She found a way to give more for the same cost.

She is a managing partner of a company in Leiria with 12 employees and an average salary of €1,400. She was considering a raise of €50 per month for each person. Before deciding, she compared it with a group health insurance plan of €450 per year.

Illustrative case: company, amounts and conditions are fictitious. A health insurance plan given to all employees is exempt from IRS and does not pay Social Security, either from the company or from the employee (Ordem dos Contabilistas Certificados, clarification “Seguro de saúde — funcionários”, of December 4, 2023). Premiums depend on the insurer and the composition of the team.

Myths

  • Myth“If I get a raise, I move up a bracket and end up earning less.”The higher rate only applies to the part of the income above the threshold. Close to the minimum wage, part of the raise may go to IRS because of the minimum subsistence amount, but the net pay does not go down. What to do: simulate the raise and see how much you keep.Source: CIRS, art.º 68.º and 70.º.
  • Myth“The IRS refund is a bonus.”It is tax you overpaid during the year that the State gives back to you, with no interest. What to do: confirm your family situation with your employer and gather your invoices in e-fatura.Source: CIRS, art.º 97.º et seq.
  • Depends“The meal allowance is tax-free.”It is exempt up to the daily limit set by law, which is higher on a card than in cash. Anything above the limit pays IRS and Social Security. What to do: check the daily amount and the payment method on your payslip.Source: CIRS, art.º 2.º, n.º 3, al. b), subal. 2).

Frequently asked questions

The gross amount is what you agreed with the company. The net amount is what you receive after Social Security contributions (11%) and IRS withholding.
On top of the salary, the company pays employer Social Security (23.75%), workers’ compensation insurance and any benefits it offers. The simulator adds everything up and shows how much reaches you out of every €100 the company spends on you.
No. Withholding is an advance payment of IRS, based on the 2026 tables. The final tax is calculated in the annual return: if too much was withheld, you get a refund; if too little, you pay the difference.
There is a proposal to lower IRS rates, still subject to approval. In “In detail” you can see how much it would change for you. We’ll update the simulator once it’s approved.
Yes. Up to €6.15 per day in cash or €10.455 on a card is exempt from IRS and Social Security; anything above that limit is taxed as salary.
If it is given to all employees, it is exempt from IRS (Article 2-A, no. 1, subparagraph e) of the CIRS) and is not subject to Social Security contributions, either from the company or from the employee (Ordem dos Contabilistas Certificados, clarification “Seguro de saúde — funcionários”, of December 4, 2023). If it is only for some, it is taxed as income in kind.
