How much can I reduce my fixed expenses?

Credit, insurance, and energy are the bills that weigh the most every month. See how much you can save on each one, how much it costs to switch, and where it's worth starting.
  • Credit, insurance, and energy together
  • With the cost of switching
  • No costs or commitment

We account for the reference spread of your mortgage and the insurance tied to the mortgage at the bank. In 'Detailed' you can change everything. The savings assumptions are provisional references from CrediSegur, to be refined with the actual averages of our clients.

How we calculate

We look at expenses together because changing one can affect the others.
  1. Mortgage

We compare your spread with a reference spread. The difference is what you could gain if you achieved that spread. It's not an offer.More work · has costs
  2. Insurance

We assume equal and cheaper insurance. If the credit insurance is with the bank, we've already deducted the increase in the monthly payment.Medium difficulty · no costs
  3. Electricity and gas

We assume a cheaper tariff for the same consumption. Changing has no costs or interruptions.Easy · no costs
Consolidating several credits into one lowers the monthly payment, but the term gets longer and you pay more interest overall. Therefore, we show this relief separately and do not add it to the savings.

Illustrative cases

Illustration: Simão and Vera with the house bills
Illustrative example

Simão and Vera looked at the three bills at once.

They live in Palmela. Between the monthly payment of €780, the credit insurance of €92 at the bank, other insurances of €55, and electricity and gas of €135, they pay €1,062 every month. They had never changed anything since buying the house.
  1. 1«Where is it worth making changes first?»
  2. 2The largest monthly savings were on the mortgage: €39.38. In the mortgage, with the spread decreasing from 1.20% to 0.75% (hypothetical), it was €39.38 per month, but changing costs about €1,588. In the credit insurance, the increase in the monthly payment took almost everything: €5.50 was left.
  3. 3They started with electricity and gas, which was the easiest. Then they asked CrediSegur to handle the credit and insurance together.

Illustrative example

Olga lives in a rented house and thought she had nowhere to cut.

She lives in Montijo. Besides the rent, she pays €560 per month: €62 in insurance, €88 for electricity and gas, and €410 in car and personal credit payments. The rent couldn't change. The rest could.
  1. 1«Without a mortgage, is there still anything to save?»
  2. 2In insurance and energy, she could save about €26 per month. Consolidating the two credits lowered the payments by €144, but with a longer term and more interest overall. The simulator showed both things separately.
  3. 3She changed the electricity and gas and asked CrediSegur for an insurance comparison. She didn't consolidate the credits: she preferred to finish paying off the car.

What is true and what is myth in fixed expenses

Four ideas we hear often, and what to do about each.
  • Depends“Switching the mortgage to another bank isn't worth it.”It depends on the spread and what you still owe. There are costs, and many banks cover part of them. What matters is how many months it takes to recover them. What to do: Check the months needed to recover the switching cost.
  • Truth“Switching electricity and gas is free.”True. There are no costs, no interruptions, and the meters don't change. It's the easiest switch of the three. What to do: Compare tariffs with your latest bill.
  • Myth“Consolidating credits is saving.”False. The monthly payment decreases, but the term extends and you pay more interest overall. It's monthly relief, not savings. What to do: Consolidate credits only if you need relief, and compare the total cost.
  • Myth“The cheapest insurance is the best.”False. Cheaper insurance with less coverage is not the same insurance. And with bank insurance, the monthly payment may increase. What to do: Compare identical coverages and calculate with the monthly payment.

Frequently Asked Questions

These are calculation assumptions by CrediSegur, with a reference value and a range: for insurance, between 10% and 40% cheaper; for electricity and gas, between 5% and 20%. They give you an idea of the value. You can change them in 'Refine assumptions'. The exact value is only known with your bills and a real comparison.
We order by what you gain in 5 years, already without the cost of switching. Next to each one, we say if it's easy and how long it takes to recover the cost. This way, you can choose the one that yields the most or the one that requires the least effort.
For your mortgage, your bank charges a fee for early repayment, and the new mortgage has appraisal and registration costs. Many banks cover part of these latter costs: we use 60% of the usual cost as an assumption. In energy, switching never costs anything. In insurance, it costs nothing if you switch at the renewal date.
You can ask your bank to review the conditions or switch the mortgage to another bank. The reference spread we use (0.75%) is just an assumption for the calculation. It is not an offer from any bank.
You can, but some affect others. If you switch the mortgage to another bank, the insurance enters the new negotiation. Therefore, each line is calculated separately. A manager helps you put everything in the right order.
Because it is not savings. The monthly payment decreases because the term is longer, and in the end, you pay more interest. It can be useful for gaining monthly relief, but it's a different decision.
